Animation Summer Course - week3 & 4

Animation Summer Course - week3 & 4

I have been running the animation summer course for young people.

On the third week, we created our own puppets. While we made them, we started to plan what story the animation will be like. Once we create the puppet, we designed and painted a background.

On the fourth week, we started to animate the puppet on the background.

The workshop was held by Mai Yoshida at Studio 106 Art Gallery in Fulham. Studio 106 Art Gallery 106 Dawes Road SW6 7EG +44(0)20 7385 5618 www.studio106artgallery.org

Animation Summer Course - week2

Animation Summer Course - week2

I have been running the animation summer course for young people.

On the second week, we used cutouts of magazines, newspapers, pictures, and books. The students chose their favourite images and cut them out. They loved it! Then they designed the layout of the collage. We used bluetac instead of glue so that we can move the cutouts easily when they take pictures to animate it. How fun!

Animation Summer Course

Animation Summer Course - week1

On the 17th June, I ran the first week of an animation summer course with a help by Arisa chan.

The purpose is to learn how to make a simple animation by using tools and materials that you can easily find and use. We used some colourful play doughs to experience the shape transforms. To shape the dough and to transform it in a right pace, we needed to try and see a few times. The students quickly understood that the less the changes you make the smoother the movement you get. The last animations of each teams were much more professional! There were a story such as a rabbit eaten by a snake and the snake eaten by a butterfly. And a girl picking many apples in a forest. And angel and her friends gathering... How fun!

Next session is about cut-out animations using collage technique!

Chinese New Year Creative Workshop

Chinese New Year Creative Workshop

On the 25th February, we celebrated Chinese New Year at Mai's Chinese New Year Creative Workshop by learning the culture, making Chinese masks and dragons. We did Chinese ink and wash painting and even fishing! The fish contained a fortune cookie inside. It was a very exciting 3 hour session. Although we initially planed to have smaller group, we ended up having 12 creative kids because the event was really popular. Sorry for the kids we had to refuse. I hope to see you at the next workshop! Please check the updates for that.

Animation workshops at French School

Wednesday Club
Draw Our Village
On the 29th Sep.

The children were to draw their own village.
I gave them A3 paper with a drawing of a road so they can start imagining the layout of their village.

Three older boys aged 7 or 8 sat and started drawing some scenes of a war with many airplanes and buildings then others who were drawing parks and ponds, started thinking what they could do to keep their village going.
Sombody said,  'Jail! we need jails!'  And the other said, 'A police station and a fire-station! A bank!'Then, everyone got excited.  Even the three year old boy was shouting excitedly. Another young boy started to draw a village with full of tanks.
Apparently he was going to fight against the rest of the villages.  And he looked happy about it.

We watched Dumbo after that.  However, it was not everyone's favorite.
Or maybe everyone was tired.

My next Wednesday Club will be on 1st of December.

Wednesday Club
Draw the sky
22th Sep 2010

We had 10 students in the class today.
I asked each group to draw the sky, in the morning in the afternoon, and in the night on A3 paper.
The morning group used a lot of yellow and blue.  They tended to draw the sun.

The sunset group drew the sea and the sunset.  I guess they are always good together.
They used a lot of orange and red with the big sun in the middle.

The night group used dark blue and black crayons.
Some drew houses and stars.Oscar drew a scene of war with air planes and destroyed buildings. Marta drew a storm in the city.

I asked Audrey and Ambre to draw both morning and night.
I am planning to combine everyone's paintings and make an animation.
It will look really good!

Wednesday Club
15th Sep 2010
Thaumatropes

I run the Wednesday Club every Wednesday at the French school in London
The student are aged between 3 and 11.

Today we made Thaumatropes using bamboo sticks and cards.
Bamboos were nicely cut and sanded into a reasonable length....by me!
Very simple to make and lots of fun to design and play with. A thaumatrope is a simple optical illusion toy that was invented in 1826, it is credited with being the first cinematographic device. It is simply a piece of stiff paper with a picture drawn on both sides and attached to a stick or two pieces of string as a means to spin it. Thauma means "magic" trope means "turner" in Greek.

Then everyone drew their own designs. Marta made a cat and a mouse, Audrey made a dolphin in the sea, and Mehdi made a squid in a cage. The idea is to draw part of your picture on one side of the paper and the other half on the other side (or piece) of paper, so that when it is spun quickly the two separate pictures merge to appear as one. A classic design is a bird cage on one side with a bird on the other, when spun the bird appears "magically" inside the previously empty cage!

We had a great time!
